Toddler X's Labor Day Picks

Labor Day weekend is here, and while we're still almost a month away from the fall equinox, to most people this marks the official end of summer. Why not send it out with a bang? There are plenty of fun events going on in the South Bay and its environs this weekend -- find one that suits you and your toddler, and enjoy!

All Weekend (Saturday, Sunday, Monday)
  • Ardenwood Rail Fair, Ardenwood Farm, Fremont. 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day. Enjoy train rides, model railroads, food, music, and of course all the animals that make Ardenwood one of our family's favorite outings. $10 for adults, kids 3 and under are free. Check out my farm review for information about the animals that Ardenwood has to offer.
  • Belmont Greek Festival, Church of the Holy Cross in Belmont. 12:00-10:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, 12:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday. "Fun Zone" for kids closes at 6:00 p.m. each day. There is currently a Groupon that reduces admission price by up to 40%.
  • Capitola Begonia Festival, Capitola Village beachfront. Capitola is one of our favorite coastal spots, and this festival looks fantastic -- sand castle contests, chalk art, crafts for kids, hula hooping, and a nautical parade, as well as several concerts and much more. Check out the link for specific times. Free.
  • King's Mountain Art Fair, Woodside. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. each day. Though art fairs aren't generally my idea of toddler-friendly fodder, this one specifically makes itself accessible to kids with a "Kiddie Hollow" where, for a nominal fee, kids can make their own arts and crafts under the supervision of high school student volunteers. The setting, amidst the mountain's gorgeous redwoods, makes this a lovely nature outing for families as well.
  • Gilroy Gardens Petting Zoo, Labor Day BBQ, and Salute to Military Heroes (active duty military personnel get free admission all weekend long). Note that GG is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Petting zoo and BBQ costs are separate from park admission. Check out my review of Gilroy Gardens for more information on the park.
  • Komodo Karnival, San Francisco Zoo. 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Carnival games and food, as well as all the usual amazing things the zoo has to offer. Check out my review of the zoo for more information on the animals and attractions.

Saturday and Sunday Only

Saturday Only
  • Los Gatos Park Dance, Oak Meadow Park. 5:30-9:30 p.m. A free family event, with two bands throughout the evening. The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad and the carousel will have extended hours, and they'll be serving up some BBQ favorites at the concession stand. Enjoy the playground, bring a picnic dinner, and let your toddler rock until bedtime.
  • SJ Earthquakes vs. Real Salt Lake, Buck Shaw Stadium at Santa Clara University, 7:30 p.m. Catch some Major Leauge Soccer during the Earthquakes' last season at Buck Shaw Stadium. Buy tickets in the family section if you want to be farther away from the very loud and very raucous cheering areas.

Sunday Only
  • Big Screen Sundays at the Children's Discovery Museum, San Jose. Short films celebrating favorite children's stories, like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Snowy Day, will be shown at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. Included with museum admission.
And remember, all those wonderful playgrounds, parks and trails where Toddler X and I like to spend our days are open on Labor Day weekend! Check out our "Top Playgrounds" link above, or feel free to message me if you need a specific recommendation. Local favorites like the Children's Discovery Museum and Happy Hollow are open all three days, and the Duck Pond has Monday afternoon hours (2-4 p.m.) on Labor Day.

Happy toddling!
