Toddler X's Fall Planner (2015)


Have I mentioned before how much I love Fall? (Here's a hint for those who are new to SV Toddler: the answer is yes.) Summer offers plenty of fun, Winter is full of wonder, and Spring is a season of anticipation and renewal (and baby animals at every farm!).

But nothing compares to the magic (or alliterative possibilities) of Fall: festivals and fairs, pumpkin patches and petting zoos, costumes and candy, trick-or-treating and turkey trotting. Throw in a Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte, and you've got yourself a pretty nice little season.

The fact that I love Fall so very much makes me even more excited to share it with you. So, without further ado, here is Toddler X's 3rd Annual Fall Planner. Read it, share it, and, more than anything else, enjoy it!

Pumpkin Patches

If you were a follower of SV Toddler in Octobers past, you may recall that I know a thing or two about the local pumpkin patches. As you start planning your squash-selecting excursions, check out my Two Sentence Pumpkin Patch Reviews for my thoughts on the local options. I'll update as this season progresses, and am always open to suggestions of other patches to visit.


Apple Orchards

Having explored most of the area's big pumpkin patches, we've now turned out attention to apples. We picked apples at Clearview Organic Orchards last year and had a blast -- here's my post on the visit. This year we tried Gizdich Ranch (yep, the farm I visit multiple times each summer for strawberry-picking -- they've got orchards too!), and again, had a great time -- click here for my review. If you know of any other local apple-picking opportunities we could try, please let me know. (Update 10/13/15: All apple picking at Clearview and Gizdich has concluded for the season.)

  • Los Gatos Park Dance, Oak Meadow Park, Los Gatos. 5:30-9:30 p.m. Free. In addition to two bands, the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad and Mason Carousel will be open for extended hours, along with the snack shack.

  • Open Cockpit Day, Hiller Aviation Musem, San Carlos. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. We went to one of these special events last month and had a blast! 
  • Willow Glen Founders' Day Parade, Downtown Willow Glen (Lincoln between Broadway and Minnesota), 10:30 a.m. A fun, small town-ish parade with lots of local residents participating. Free.
  • San Jose Taiko -- Kids Interactive Performance, St. James Park, Downtown San Jose. 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Free.
  • Santa Clara Art and Wine Festival, Central Park, 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. We went two years ago, and while the food/wine/craft areas were packed, the kids' area had some fun inflatables, a fire truck and rides. Apparently there's a brand new "Toddler Town" this year. Admission is free.
  • Chitactac Family Day, Chitactac-Adams County Park, Gilroy. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. A celebration of the Ohlone Native Americans who lived in the area, with hands-on activities, crafts and wildlife. Free.
  • Luna Park Chalk Art Festival, Backesto Park, San Jose. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. A really cool event, where artists and amateurs alike create amazing feats of chalk artistry on sidewalk squares around the park. You can even get a square for your family or group of friends! Backesto also has a great, shady playground. Free admission and parking.
  • Coyote Valley Family Harvest Feast, Coyote Valley Park, Morgan Hill. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Free admission and parking, food, entertainment, guided hikes, games, and visits from Happy Hollow animals.

It's not a race, and there's no start or end point -- you can walk/ride/skate in either direction. Kid-friendly activities include hayrides, games and Veggielution tours at Emma Prusch, fun from Happy Hollow, roller skating at Aloha Roller Rink, and family-friendly activities relating to SJSU's homecoming at Plaza de Cesar Chavez.   • Halloween Spooktacular, Red Morton Community Center, Redwood City. 12:00-3:00 p.m. For infants through age 10. Games, maze, treats, crafts, and a costume parade at 1:30. $5 per child.
  • Fall Harvest Festival, Live Earth Farm, Watsonville. 2:00 p.m. - Dark. Scavenger hunt, pumpkin patch, pumpkin decorating, games, food, music, family yoga, potluck dinner and bonfire. $20 per car.
  • Sunol's Old Timey Hootenanny, Sunol-Ohlone Regional Wilderness, Sunol. 3:00-7:00 p.m. Square dancing and live music, crafts and games, and food for sale at this celebration of the area's cowboy and ranching heritage. Parking is $5.
  • Pumpkin Train Evening Rides, Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, Oak Meadow Park, Los Gatos. 5:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Halloween Haunts, Hidden Villa Farm, Los Altos. AGES 4-12. A 45 minute guideed haunted trail tour, followed by entertainment, seasonal foods and farm-y fun. Various group times between 6:15-9:45 p.m. Reservations required.
  • Halloween Night Train Rides, Ardenwood Historic Farm, Fremont. 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. Cost is $6 for ages 13+, $4 for kids 3-12, and kids 2 and under are free. For safety reasons, each child under 3 must be accompanied by a separate adult. Rides are tailored for families with kids under age 12.   • Little Pumpkin Party, Hidden Villa Farm, Los Altos. 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. A fun, very low key Halloween farm event for families with kids aged 1-4 (we went when Toddler X was about 22 months and had a blast). Reservations required, and it will almost certainly sell out.
  • 21st Annual California Avenue Trick-or-Treat and Halloween Carnival, California Avenue between Birch and Park, Palo Alto. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Trick-or-treating, police cars and fire trucks, carnival games and crafts, entertainment (including Andy Z), a special storytime, and a costume contest at 1:00. Free.

  • Nightmare@Triton Art Museum and Family Art Day, Triton Art Museum, Santa Clara. 6:00-8:00 p.m. A free evening of hands-on art exhibits for families. (Note: I've only been to the usual daytime versions of this event, so I'm not sure what the Halloween spin will be, but these are generally geared toward early elementary and school-age kids, so I can't imagine it would be anything terrifying.)
